Meir Kahalon has been Chairman of the Union for Libyan Immigrants since 1992. In 1938, he was born in Tripoli, Libya. He made Aliyah to Israel in 1949.
Meir is a resident of Moshav Ahisamach. He is married to Malka, and is a father to five daughters and eleven grandchildren.
Meir completed his high school education at the Ben Shemen Youth Village. After his army service, he studied education and leadership, and worked in youth leadership. Later, he became a part of the Moshav’s management and public activities. Between 1958 and 1961, Meir acted as the General Secretary of Moshav Ahisamach. From 1961 to 1967, he served as the General Manager of the Agricultural Transport Association. From 1968 to 1972, Meir was the General Manager for the Development Company of the Central Region Moshavim. From 1972 to 1978, he acted as General Manager of the Hod Avaz Slaughterhouse in Kiryat Malachi, from 1978 to 1988, General Manager of the Association of Moshavim in the South and Center of Israel, and from 1988 to 1995, Chairman of the National Unit for Regional Integration of the Histadrut (General Federation of Labor), as a Shaliach (emissary) for the Moshav Movement. From 1995 to 1998, Meir worked as the Regional Manager for the Histadrut’s South and Negev district (in the Organization Department and Workers’ Council). From 1998 to 2003, Meir was General Manager of the Shefelah Region, and was responsible for collection of dues, member registration and assets for the Histradrut in the Shefelah Region.
In addition, Meir has filled various public positions and has represented numerous organizations. His roles have included: Board member and Chairman of the Board at the Moshav. Assembly Member and Regional Council Board of Modiim. Branch Secretary and delegate for the Mapai Conference, and later for the Avodah (Labor) Party. Meir was a member of the Party’s Central Office between the years of 1958 to 1998. Additionally, he served as member and Secretary of the Avodah Party’s Moshav District, representative for Moshav Ahisamach at the Moshav Movement Conference, as well as board and council member for 6 terms. Meir served on the board of the Sephardic Federation as a representative from the Association of Libyan Immigrants in Israel and the World Organization of Libyan Jews, as well as the representative for the Sephardic Federation at the Zionist Congress as, an acting member of the Finance and Budget Committee in the Zionist Federation, delegate of the General Histadrut Conference and member of the Vaad HaPoel (Executive Committee) from 1989 until 1998. Meir was a member of the Histadrut Parliament, serving as a member of both the Finance Committee and Constitution Committee, and delegate for the new General Histadrut Conference from 1994 through 1998. Since 1992 and until the present, Meir has been a member of the Assembly and Secretariat for the Histadrut in the Shefelah Region, as well as Chairman of the Association for Libyan. Up until 2006, Meir served as CEO, Vice President and Acting Chairman of the World Organization of Libyan Jews; since 2006 he has been the Chairman of the World Organization of Libyan Jews from 2006. Meir is on the Board of Directors of the Libyan Immigrants at the Central Organization for Holocaust survivors, and represented the World Organization of Libyan Jews at JJAC – the national justice organization for Jewish immigrants from Arab nations. He is also Chairman of the Central Organization of Jewish immigrants from Arab nations.
Today, Meir continues his various volunteer activities for the community.
He joined the Board of Directors for the Foundation for the Benefit of Holocaust Victims in Israel in September 2010.
